LOCAL COMMUNITY CHALLENGED TO MATCH A $10,000 GIFT
MADE TO THE SPICEWOOD VFD-EMS IN HONOR OF LESTER FAMILY
SPICEWOOD, TX (December 4, 2018) – An anonymous couple, longtime residents of Spicewood, have donated $10,000 to the Spicewood Volunteer Fire Dept. & Emergency Medical Services. The gift, however, comes with a matching challenge to the citizens of Spicewood, of one of Texas’ largest unincorporated communities.
The donation is being made to honor former Fire Chief Dean Lester and his family members who have been involved with the all-volunteer department for over 35 years. Lester, now retired from the department, and his wife Patsy have been part of the VFD since it was founded in 1976. Patsy Lester currently serves as the VFD’s EMS Director, and their granddaughter, Jamie, along with her husband, Billy, also participate as officers and first responders.
Today the department, and its 23 volunteer personnel, handle an average of 300 emergency calls each year, in a 55-square mile area of southeastern Burnet County under a contract through the county’s Emergency Services District No. 9.
According to Fire Chief, Lark Camacho, this donation has come at a great time given the recent occurrence of unforeseen events in our community. With the rapid growth in population coupled with the onset of hotter weather, larger wildfires, and devastating flooding now is an ideal opportunity to put local donations to good use on such things as:
· A back-up generator for the station, enabling the fire hall to double as an emergency center and temporary shelter during times of crisis.
· Additions to on-site water storage tanks
· Acquisition of more robust equipment for fighting unpredictably large wildfires
“This donation can be a tremendous holiday gift to the community, in honor of a family that has served Spicewood residents for many years, said Fire Captain Dennis Levlon, President of the VFD. “We have until February 15th, 2019 for the community to match this contribution and help us raise $20,000. I am confident that the residents and businesses of this area will respond generously and quickly”.
To Respond to Your Responders, and have your donation matched dollar for dollar, visit the “DONATE” section of the VFD website (SpicewoodVFD.org), or mail your check to Spicewood VFD-EMS, PO Box 2, Spicewood, TX 78669 before February 15th. All donations will be matched up to $10,000, and contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law
